Mastery

  • Ranged weapon attributes which are based on this skill will increase significantly. Additionally, master weapons can be used.

Properties

  • This skill will unlock weapon attributes that require Ranged Weapons skill (like "Attack speed (Ranged Weapons)).
  • "Item Level Without Penalty" reduces the speed penalties for equipping high-level weapons, it doesn't allow equipping weapons above certain threshold (which depends on character level)

Breakpoints

  • Item level without penalty is increased by one for every two skill points spent, starting at character level value. It is capped at 250.

Types

Ranged weapons consist of:

Breakdown of the various Ranged Weapon Types

Bows

Bows are typically very powerful, dealing high damage per strike and coming with a variety of possible modifiers. The different skins have different Ranged Weapon Lore unlockable modifiers meaning you can choose the one that works best for you.

Damage Type

  • Bows deal mostly physical damage, but will often deal a slight bit of elemental damage as well. I am not certain if it is possible to get two elements added to physical damage, but if it is it is quite rare.

Damage

  • Moderate to High, depending on bow type.

Firing Speed

  • Moderate

Projectile Speed

  • Fast

Projectile Path

  • Straight Line
  • Can be affected by terrain
  • If the arrows reaches the edge of the map it will turn around and bounce back, criss-crossing the world and impacting the enemies if they happen to cross paths.

Range

  • Long
  • Can pierce targets with appropriate modifiers. (On the bow itself or from the Dryad's Capricious Hunter tree)

Sockets

  • Up to two gold sockets as well as the grey damage converter socket.

Blowpipes

Only useable by Dryads, blowpipes are quite difficult to find. Enemies will only rarely drop them and the only occasionally show up in a merchant's inventory. Additionally there are no rare or legendary blowpipes, limiting the user to those that can be bought or dropped. All blowpipes share the same Ranged Weapon Lore unlockable modifiers, providing additonal chances of triggering a secondary damage effect or slowing the opponent.

Damage Type

  • Blowpipes deal a large percentage of physical damage, however they almost always come with added elemental damage and can often be found with two secondary elements.

Damage

  • Moderate

Firing Speed

  • Fast

Projectile Speed

  • Instant

Projectile Path

  • Straight Line based on results in game, however there is no projectile so cannot tell for certain
  • Can be affected by terrain

Range

  • Moderate
  • Does not appear to be capable of piercing targets.

Sockets

  • Up to two gold sockets as well as the grey damage converter socket.

Throwing Daggers

Throwing Daggers can be hard to find in stores, they look identical to sword-type daggers however they come with different modifiers. All in all they are quite similar to throwing stars however personally I find stars more effective because they have access to quite powerful rare modifiers.

Damage Type

  • Throwing Daggers mostly deal physical damage, however they can also include other damage types.

Damage

  • Low

Firing Speed

  • Very Fast

Projectile Speed

  • Moderate

Projectile Path

  • Parabolic Curve
  • Can be affected by terrain, however they work better than other ranged weapons in the desert because they can arc over the sand dunes at times.

Range

  • Short
  • Can pierce targets with appropriate modifiers. (On the bow itself or from the Dryad's Capricious Hunter tree)

Sockets

  • Up to two gold sockets as well as the grey damage converter socket. However since they are one handed you can also equip a shield, adding additional sockets.

Throwing Stars

In my opinion one of the best possible boss killing weapons for a ranged toon, throwing stars are one handed weapons that can come with a wealth of mods that no other ranged weapon can have. Although useless for the stars themselves they can remove melee reflection chance from enemies. They also can be found with %-Based Leech Life and %-Chance for Deadly Wounds. I have yet to see one that spawns with both those gold modifiers on it however if it is possible to find one it would be incredibly powerful.

Damage Type

  • Throwing Stars mostly deal physical damage, however they can also include other damage types.

Damage

  • Low

Firing Speed

  • Very Fast

Projectile Speed

  • Moderate

Projectile Path

  • Parabolic Curve
  • Can be affected by terrain, however they work better than other ranged weapons in the desert because they can arc over the sand dunes at times.

Range

  • Can pierce targets with appropriate modifiers. (On the bow itself or from the Dryad's Capricious Hunter tree)

Sockets

  • Up to two gold sockets as well as the grey damage converter socket. However since they are one handed you can also equip a shield, adding additional sockets.

Energy Pistols

The last of the one-handed ranged weapons the energy pistol is quite different. It fires a visually larger projectile that moves quite slowly, more than capable of missing it's target if the target sidesteps. However the damage on them is higher than the other thrown weapons, making up for that fact if you end up in close range.

Damage Type

  • Energy weapons often spawn with three damage types, easily allowing for secondary effect triggering when not converted.

Damage

  • Moderate

Firing Speed

  • Moderate Slow

Projectile Speed

  • Slow

Projectile Path

  • Straight Line
  • Can be affected by Terrain
  • If the energy discharge reaches the edge of the map it will turn around and bounce back, criss-crossing the world and impacting the enemies if they happen to cross paths.

Range

  • Infinite? There is no apparent maximum range for the projectile so for the purpose of gameplay purposes they can continue on forever.
  • Can pierce targets with appropriate modifiers on the pistol

Sockets

  • Up to two gold sockets as well as the grey damage converter socket. However since they are one handed you can also equip a shield, adding additional sockets.

Energy Staves

  • The last of the ranged weapons it is visually similar to energy pistols, firing the same projectile at similar speeds. The damage is higher however due to it being two-handed.

Damage Type Energy weapons often spawn with three damage types, easily allowing for secondary effect triggering when not converted.

Projectile Path

Range

  • Infinite? There is no apparent maximum range for the projectile so for the purpose of gameplay purposes they can continue on forever.
  • In theory should be able to pierce targets (just like the BFG does), however they do not gain chance to pierce as an unlockable modifier. Instead they can deal damage to additional opponents, which can be a similar effect.

Sockets

  • Up to two gold sockets as well as the grey damage converter socket.
