Properties

  • To get the highest quality items, this skill should be two times or even more than the character level (this might be just a myth).
  • Items that have "+ Bargaining skill" should be equipped before you click on a merchant (otherwise the wares will be generated with the lower skill value).


Breakpoints

The Higher Quality of Wares bonus at a given skill level x is given fairly precisely by the following formula:

  • (x+1)/10 Pre-Mastery and Mastery

As an example, quality of wares at x=80: 80 is a mastery level, so we take the mastery formula and we have

(80+1)/10 = 8.1

This value compared with the table value is a good example of the precision the formula offers.

Something for new players to consider

If you take Bargaining at level 1, work hard to keep it above your level (as most of the build examples say) and you are not swimming in cash, you won't be able to buy anything from the vendor. They will be stocked fully with things you can't possibly afford. However, if you are just starting out and don't have much cash, then waiting to take Bargaining at level 8, or even 12, could help you a lot more. The principal reason people really want bargaining in the end-game is for rings and amulets. You can't get better than yellow items from a vendor - all gold and green items are quest rewards or drops.

A good example to consider is the +1 Bargaining relics you want to buy right away. It appears the loot algorithm determines the loot rarity first, then determines the attributes from a set. So this means you can have the following:

Relic of Antidote (Yellow)
+8 Poison Resistance
+1 to Bargaining
Cost: 2400

And

Relic of Antidote (White)
+9 Poison Resistance
+1 to Bargaining
Cost: 46

In this example, the inferior item is actually more expensive. At level 2, with a Bargaining of 3, you will see mostly examples of blue and yellow items and no white ones. For those with high level main characters that have funded a second character this is no big deal. But your first character won't have a lot of cash.
